Massage therapies date back thousands of years, with some massage even once thought to have mystical healing properties. Most are good for your body, and to relieve stress and tensions. Here is a list of some of the most popular types of massage therapies that you can help to help your back, or your muscles.

Remedial Massage

If you are looking for a mild massage treatment which is soothing and relaxing, then this could suit your requirements.  During a massage treatment period, the therapist would have you lying down  on a cushioned  treatment bed in which  light oil or lotion would be applied into the body, and massage the oils into the body for a relaxing experience which will leave you with a sense of well being.

Hot Stone Massage

If you want to try something different, perhaps a hot stone massage treatment  would be something you may want to consider. The use of hot stones for healing, dates back to ancient times, the stones are usually made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. River stones are the best to use because they are so smooth,  having been smoothed over time, by the river’s current.

This massage treatment uses hot flat stones  to help relax the muscular tissues during a  treatment, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure.  Basalt rocks or stones are warmed in water to a certain temperature before being placed on specific points on the back, the heat will warm and relax the muscles and will also improve circulation.  Some massage therapists place stones on points that are thought to be energy centers of the body, generally thought to rebalance the body and mind.

Reflexology

Reflexology massage is a treatment on the most responsive areas of the body, which may be the back, arms or feet that are  affected by pain or discomfort. Reflexology is a popular complementary therapy, which involves  pressure being applied to the parts of the body with stress and tension. These will send signals that balance the nervous system and release chemicals in the body, such as endorphins which reduce pain and stress.

Reflexology promotes relaxation, improves circulation, reduces pain, and soothes tired muscles. Reflexology is also used for postoperative  treatment for a patient’s care, or recovery state. Reflexology treatment also helps if you suffer from tension headaches and stress related conditions. If you suffer from hormonal imbalances, or digestive disorders, reflexology may be something you can consider. Many famous sports athletes suffer from sports injuries, and have a regular physiotherapist on their team to give them a massage and reflexology treatment.

Indian Massage

Indian massage treatment is one which doesn’t involve bare skin during the massage treatment. This form of treatment started in India, but was developed and used in Thailand.  The massage usually begins with the upper back, where  deep massage on pressure points will help to relax the muscles and to loosen  knots. Moving onto the shoulders and upper arms, massage further releases  stress and tension, and finally working deeply into the neck where tension accumulates.  This will alleviate  headaches, and  can  help to calm the mind and is  deeply relaxing.

The massage techniques used  consist of  firm and gentle rhythm which help to relieve muscular discomfort, tension and aids relaxation, whilst improving circulation in the head.  To finish with the  treatment may include a gentle face massage which can help circulation and skin tone.

Acupressure

Acupressure is used in the  types of massage therapies and is often looked upon as an alternative medical technique. Acupressure practitioners will use their hands by applying pressure with their fingers and palms, and even their elbows. The benefits are well known, and many people feel reinvigorated after it. An acupressure session involves you laying down fully clothed on a soft massage table. The practitioner then gently applies pressure on the acupressure points on your body.

The goal of acupressure is to restore health and balance to the body’s channels of energy and to regulate opposing forces of yin and yang. Some people claim acupressure not only helps improve the energy fields of the body, but also the mind, emotions, and spirit.   Some studies suggest that acupressure will help with back pain, postoperative pain and other ailments which bring pain. People who suffer from arthritis may also benefit from this treatment, acupressure helps to release endorphins with anti inflammatory effects, which may improve from this type of treatment.
